Equinix Launches AI-Ready Chennai Facility To Expand Open, Vendor-Neutral Cloud Ecosystem In India

Equinix has launched a $69 million AI-ready data centre in Chennai to strengthen India’s open digital backbone, offering low-latency access to global cloud platforms and interconnection with Mumbai’s ecosystem.

Equinix has opened its AI-ready International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre in Chennai with an initial investment of $69 million (₹608 crore), expanding India’s open digital backbone.

Located on SIPCOT land in Siruseri and spread across nearly six acres, the CN1 facility begins with a capacity of 800 cabinets and will eventually scale up to 4250. The new site is interconnected with Equinix’s three IBX data centres in Mumbai, enabling businesses in Chennai to access a broader digital ecosystem with low latency.

The Chennai centre is designed to accelerate business digitisation and AI adoption in India by supporting open, vendor-neutral access to global cloud platforms. Equinix’s Mumbai campus already provides on-ramps to Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud, and Chennai customers can now leverage the same connectivity.

Equinix currently serves over 300 companies in India, including network service providers and five internet exchanges. By extending its reach to Tamil Nadu, the company is aiming to provide enterprises in southern India with seamless integration into global digital networks.

“Our success in building the most interconnected ecosystem for cloud, carrier, content and enterprises in Mumbai will now be extended to customers in Tamil Nadu. Similarly, global enterprises planning to come closer to their customers in southern India now can leverage Equinix’s IBX facility in Chennai,” said Manoj Paul, Managing Director, Equinix India.

Globally, Equinix operates more than 270 data centres across 77 markets in 36 countries, serving over 10,000 businesses. Its Asia-Pacific portfolio includes more than 60 facilities spanning Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore.
