Hyundai Mobis has adopted an open source software development model for SDVs, joining the Eclipse Foundation’s S-Core Project to help standardise automotive software platforms and accelerate autonomous mobility innovation.

Hyundai Mobis has adopted an open-source development model for mobility software, marking its first public release of internally developed software technologies to accelerate the creation of global Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) standards.

The company has joined the SDV Working Group under the Eclipse Foundation and will participate in the open-source S-Core Project, a global initiative launched mainly by European companies in late 2024 to standardise foundational SDV technologies, including middleware and software platforms.

The S-Core Project is described as the first open-source-based SDV software platform initiative designed to meet ASIL-B automotive functional safety requirements. Thirteen companies are currently participating in the effort.

Hyundai Mobis said the move will allow developers worldwide to freely use, modify, and improve selected software technologies, applying an IT-style open-source collaboration model directly to the automotive mobility sector. The approach is expected to reduce redundant investments, improve interoperability, and strengthen system stability for autonomous driving and next-generation SDV applications.

As part of the initiative, Hyundai Mobis plans to disclose a Linux-based container solution designed to minimise interference between software applications within SDV systems. The company said the technology operates more than 10 times faster than existing automotive controller solutions and includes an always-on integrity assurance function to help prevent software tampering and external intrusion risks.

The participation is also expected to expand the Europe-led open-source automotive initiative into Asian markets while strengthening Hyundai Mobis’ position as a developer of global mobility software platforms.
