An open-source handheld computer combines interchangeable hardware modules, an ESP32-S3 processor, and community-developed software to support gaming, productivity, and embedded development.
PocketByte is an open-source handheld computer, inspired by traditional personal digital assistants (PDAs). The device integrates productivity and entertainment into a small and modular machine. With an ESP32-S3 chip at its core, PocketByte includes a 2.8-inch IPS display, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, microSD slot, and 1,500mAh rechargeable battery. It supports playing games, listening to music, creating notes, and executing custom applications.
One of the main features of PocketByte is that the device includes a magnetic modular expansion system, allowing users to change input modules in a tool-free manner. Available modules include gamepad, a QWERTY keyboard, and a breadboard are currently available; however, developers can create additional modules using a published expansion interface.
The software platform is built around and is powered by an open-source firmware, SDK, and C library based on ESP-IDF and FreeRTOS, enabling developers to write their applications, games, and utilities. Additionally, it also includes a Wi-Fi-enabled app store that allows users to install community-developed applications. Publicly available tools encourage users to inspect, modify, and extend both the software and hardware components of PocketByte.
The PocketByte also supports retro gaming through emulation from popular classic consoles, such as NES, Game Boy, SNES, and Sega Genesis, and also has native community-developed applications. Moreover, the system has a number of other built-in applications, such as music player, text editor with cloud synchronisation, and graphical launcher that provides access to all the applications from one interface.
