An open-source platform combines cloud services, firmware, and mobile application support to help developers build, customise, and manage connected IoT products using their own cloud infrastructure.
Espressif has introduced ESP RainMaker Neo, an open-source implementation of its IoT platform that provides a complete device-to-cloud-to-phone application stack for connected products. Built on AWS Serverless architecture, the platform includes the cloud backend, firmware SDK, firmware examples, phone application SDK, and a reference mobile application, allowing developers to deploy the entire solution within their own AWS accounts.
In contrast to traditional cloud platforms, where the infrastructure is managed by the vendor, ESP RainMaker Neo provides the end-users with control over the cloud environment, data, security policies, integrations, and the lifecycle of cloud operations.
The ESP RainMaker Neo software stack is fully open-source under the Apache License 2.0, allowing developers, makers, startups, systems integrators, OEMs, and corporations to inspect, adapt, and customise the platform based on their specific application needs. Espressif states that making the whole software stack open-source aims at fostering collaboration within the community and innovating rapidly.
In cases where enterprise features are required, however, some additional commercial modules can still be used, such as analytics, governance, fleet management, single sign-on, role-based access control, logging, managed updates, and business analytics. Current ESP RainMaker installations will continue to be supported as ESP RainMaker Classic, ensuring that users have the chance to gradually switch to the new platform without compromising their current products.
By offering the entire connected-product stack as an open source platform without affecting compatibility with existing development workflows, ESP RainMaker Neo offers developers a customisable platform for developing IoT products.
