Open-Source Database Helps Optimise 3D Printing

An open-source tool combines data on hot ends and polymers to estimate flow rates, print speeds and heater requirements for different 3D printing setups.

Robert Samples has developed MeltCalc, an open-source database and modelling tool designed to help users understand the thermal and material limits of 3D printers based on fused deposition modelling. The project brings together information on hot ends and printing materials, helping users determine whether a particular hot end can process a given filament at a desired rate.

MeltCalc includes data on 64 hot ends and 36 polymers used in 3D printing. The tool can estimate maximum flow rates and print speeds while accounting for technologies such as Core Heating Technology nozzles. This provides users with a way to compare different hardware and material combinations when selecting printing parameters.

The prediction model used by MeltCalc is based on thermodynamic modelling developed by Samples, who has professional experience working with polymers. The project aims to provide more realistic flow-rate predictions rather than relying solely on manufacturer specifications, which can be optimistic.

MeltCalc also allows users to examine how hot-end performance interacts with material properties and printing conditions. This allows users to evaluate different combinations before testing their printers at higher flow rates and speeds.

The source code and mathematical modelling behind MeltCalc are freely available through GitHub. Developers and 3D-printing enthusiasts can access the project and contribute to its further development.
