Ubuntu users on ARM64 chips can now install critical security updates without restarting their computers.
Canonical has brought its Livepatch tool to the ARM64 architecture, launching it alongside Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and Ubuntu Core 26. This tool lets system administrators apply important Linux kernel security fixes instantly to a running system, completely eliminating the need for a system reboot.
Previously, this feature was mostly restricted to traditional x86 Intel and AMD processors. However, with ARM64 chips now dominating modern cloud servers and smart edge devices, extending this support became vital.
The update fixes two major headaches for tech teams:
-
Cloud Servers: Companies running large ARM-based servers can fix deep system vulnerabilities without forcing temporary offline windows or interrupting live users.
-
Smart Devices (IoT): Remote or isolated smart gadgets running Ubuntu Core 26 can receive over-the-air patches safely, even if they are in hard-to-reach locations where a failed reboot could break the device.
Canonical highlighted that this change will help businesses easily meet strict new cybersecurity laws (like Europe’s Cyber Resilience Act) that require rapid security fixes. Livepatch for ARM64 is available now and is included for up to 10 years through an Ubuntu Pro subscription, which is free for personal use on up to five machines.
