News has been circulating about an open-source AI agent surpassing its larger rivals in terms of desktop and web automation. NorthCUA-Pro demonstrates what advanced training and architecture are capable of producing impressive AI outcomes without relying on trillion-parameter models.
Benefits of NorthCUA-Pro 397B in AI Automation
NorthCUA-Pro was released on November 3, 2026. There are three model sizes: Nano (9B), Mini (35B), and Pro (397B). All the models are based on Qwen3.5. They are created to automate tasks using desktop applications and web interfaces. As per its technical report, Pro proves to be superior to closed models Qwen3.8-Max and Kimi-K3 in the OSWorld-Verified desktop benchmark.
In addition, it outperforms both competitors on WebArena-Verified, while the Mini version outshines Kimi-K3 on desktop tasks and Qwen3.8-Max on web ones. The release includes model weights, training code, documentation, and a Harness execution framework.
Among the strengths of NorthCUA, one should mention its training system. It comprises the Experience Flywheel for gathering real-world tasks, Harness for handling prolonged interactions and a Staged Learning procedure that comprises supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning. As it is reported in the project, there are more than 4 million GUI interaction steps gathered in various apps and web interfaces.
Moreover, it offers an ultra-fast version of the agent, known as NorthCUA-Ultrafast, which is capable of completing web tasks 2.3 times faster on average than the standard inference setup. Nevertheless, the ultra-fast agent has less intermediate reasoning but faster action selection.
