Realtek Joins Open Source Silicon Security Project OpenTitan To Develop Hardware Root Of Trust Devices

Realtek has joined OpenTitan, the world’s first open-source silicon Root of Trust project, to help develop transparent hardware security technologies and accelerate commercial adoption of open-source secure silicon.

Realtek Semiconductor has joined OpenTitan, the world’s first open-source silicon Root of Trust (RoT) project, strengthening industry momentum behind open-source hardware security and transparent silicon development.

Stewarded by lowRISC, OpenTitan enables organisations to inspect, evaluate and contribute to commercial-grade secure silicon designs. As a project partner, Realtek plans to leverage OpenTitan’s vendor- and platform-agnostic intellectual property to develop discrete hardware Root of Trust devices for its telecommunications, networking and IoT portfolio.

The company will collaborate with OpenTitan coalition members on silicon design, reference firmware and verification collateral, expanding contributions to the open-source hardware security ecosystem.

OpenTitan is designed to provide a trustworthy security foundation for data-centre servers, storage devices, peripherals and connected edge devices through openly auditable silicon security architectures.

The announcement follows a recent milestone for the project, which achieved commercial availability of what is described as the first commercial-quality open-source Root of Trust chip design. Realtek’s addition is expected to further accelerate adoption through its manufacturing scale and expertise across networking, multimedia and connected-device markets.

“With billions of connected devices coming online, rooting security in the silicon is no longer optional-it is a foundational requirement for the entire global supply chain,” said Javier Orensanz Martinez, CEO of lowRISC. “We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Realtek to the OpenTitan coalition. Their massive global footprint in networking and IoT communications will be instrumental in driving the widespread adoption of open, trustworthy silicon security.”

Yee-Wei Huang, vice president and spokesman at Realtek, said joining OpenTitan supports the company’s goal of advancing transparent, high-performance security architectures and helping standardise hardware security across the industry.
