Openterface KeyMod is a pocket-sized open-source USB tool that turns Android and iOS devices into keyboards, mice, gamepads, presentation remotes and SSH terminals.
TechxArtisan has introduced Openterface KeyMod, a compact USB multi-tool that allows smartphones and tablets to control PCs, servers, kiosks, Raspberry Pi boards and other USB hosts. The device is available in KeyMod Mini with a USB-C connector and KeyMod Plus with USB-A, with the two versions supporting Bluetooth and wired connections respectively.
KeyMod is built around a WCH CH32V208 RISC-V microcontroller operating at up to 144 MHz. Its USB composite architecture allows it to function as a keyboard and mouse through the USB HID interface, including at the BIOS level. The USB CDC-ECM network bridge enables applications such as SSH, VNC, SCP and rsync over TCP. KeyMod draws 5 V power directly from the target computer and does not require an internal battery.
KeyCmd is the companion application for KeyMod and supports Android 5.0 and later and iOS/iPadOS 17 and later. Users can send text, scripts, API keys and passwords as keystrokes. The application also supports SSH command execution, custom input sequences and using the smartphone as a gamepad or presentation controller.
KeyMod uses the USB CDC-ECM interface, allowing macOS and Linux systems to recognise it as a network interface without additional drivers. RNDIS support for Windows is still under development. The developers are also working on an AI Agent Mode that would combine terminal commands with HID input to troubleshoot systems such as embedded devices.
KeyMod follows TechxArtisan’s open-source approach. The company intends to publish the KeyCmd applications on GitHub after the Kickstarter campaign, while hardware designs will be shared through Crowd Supply. Both KeyMod variants are available for pre-order through Crowd Supply at $42 each, with shipments scheduled for February 2027.
