India is not only working on making basic models of artificial intelligence but has also started looking for ways to build AI solutions for its population. BharatGen‘s Ganesh Ramakrishnan stated that locally built AI will become a requirement for India’s Viksit Bharat 2047 plan.
BharatGen Sovereign AI to Help India Build its Digital Future
During the ET Vision Conclave 5.0, Ganesh Ramakrishnan, the founding director of BharatGen and a professor at IIT Bombay, mentioned the necessity to develop AI models that would understand India’s languages, culture and public sector requirements. He pointed out that most global AI models are built predominantly for the English language and may have difficulties working with India’s languages and documents. BharatGen is trying to fix the issue by building AI models for 22 Indian languages and English.
The Param series developed by the initiative covers such areas as reasoning, coding, and mathematics. Its Shrutam and Sooktam models focus on speech recognition and voice generation. Besides, the initiative is creating the Patram – a document understanding model for government documents, banking documents, insurance, and medical reports.
The initiative is focused on implementing AI into real-world solutions instead of concentrating on research only. The AI models created by BharatGen are currently applied in solutions like MahaSamvaad and InsureCopilot. Other solutions include AI-based projects for healthcare, education, government services, and insurance. According to the presentation, its insurance assistant is able to cut down document review time from hours to five minutes or less in certain cases, which could potentially automate 70% of cases. The initiative has created the training corpus, consisting of over 22 trillion tokens and 10 trillion Indian language tokens.
The plans for the future include improving AI reasoning, developing voice technology in Indian languages, and creating APIs for businesses and developers. The major challenge for BharatGen is making its systems affordable and reliable. For India, the sovereign AI is not only building indigenous models but making sure that AI technology serves its population and gives a higher degree of control over data and infrastructure.
