The open-source emulator now supports more than three-quarters of the PlayStation 3 library, advancing long-term game preservation across multiple desktop platforms.

An open-source PlayStation 3 emulator has reached a milestone by supporting more than 75 percent of the console’s game library. According to the latest project statistics, the new numbers demonstrate that 2,681 out of 3,559 known PlayStation 3 games could now be run via the emulator on Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD.

The developers aim to preserve the whole PlayStation 3 software library. This milestone is significant as support for physical media and online services is gradually being phased out.

As per the latest statistics of the project, fewer than 900 titles still require further work. Of the remaining ones, there are games that are playable, but have serious problems with graphics or performance, as well as games that do not even load fully.

The emulator supports both x86 and Arm64 architectures, and hence can be used in any desktop computer as well as any handheld gaming device that is compatible with this project. Users can also check whether a particular game is supported through the project’s online compatibility database.

This achievement demonstrates the importance of open-source software when it comes to preserving the old digital platforms. This is because, through such software, this helps preserve older games even after the original hardware becomes obsolete.

Although game emulation remains controversial, emulators are generally considered legal provided they are used with legitimately owned games and do not infringe copyright.
