CNCF and Docker are teaming up to bolster open source projects with secure container distribution, advanced security tools, and scalable infrastructure support.

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) has announced a new partnership with Docker, Inc. to provide secure, scalable support for CNCF-hosted open source projects. As part of the collaboration, all CNCF projects will gain access to Docker’s Sponsored Open Source (DSOS) program, which unlocks premium registry, security, and support services.

Through DSOS, CNCF projects benefit from unlimited image pulls on Docker Hub, sponsored OSS status for enhanced trust, access to Docker Scout for vulnerability analysis and policy enforcement, automated image builds, usage insights, and streamlined support. Docker Hub, the world’s largest container image registry, processes more than 22 billion image downloads monthly and hosts over 14 million images, making it a key distribution platform for the open source ecosystem.

This partnership addresses critical needs for both maintainers and users. Maintainers gain secure, production-ready infrastructure with greater visibility and automation, while users benefit from trusted and reliable access to cloud native tools. CNCF projects will also gain added security through Docker Scout and Docker Hardened Images, reinforcing the open source software supply chain with DevSecOps best practices.

Chris Aniszczyk, CTO at CNCF, said, “Docker was a founding member of CNCF, and we’ve maintained a long-term open collaboration over the past decade. This partnership marks a step forward for CNCF projects and we’re glad to work together to further secure the open source supply chain.”

Michael Donovan, VP of Products at Docker, added, “This partnership with CNCF reflects a broader commitment to the open source community by helping maintainers grow their projects, reach more developers through Docker Hub, and deliver value to their communities faster with improved tools, automation, and support.”

James Spurin, Docker Captain and CNCF Ambassador, noted, “Extending the DSOS program to CNCF projects will be a game-changer for maintainers and contributors alike.”

All CNCF projects are now eligible for DSOS enrolment and will receive a dedicated badge on Docker Hub.
