Vault12 has made its decade-tested Shamir Secret Sharing engine open source, enabling developers to add quantum-safe data storage to iOS, Android, and web apps.
Vault12, the pioneer in crypto inheritance, has released its Shamir Secret Sharing plugin for the Capacitor framework as an open source tool, allowing developers to integrate quantum-safe data storage into iOS, Android, and web applications.
The plugin provides information-theoretic security, splitting sensitive data into multiple cryptographic shards. This approach eliminates single points of failure and ensures security even in a post-quantum computing world. The engine has been battle-tested for a decade on nearly a million devices as part of Vault12 Guard, a mobile app for decentralised backup and crypto inheritance.
“Developers building self-custody and high-assurance apps need tools that won’t break the moment quantum computing becomes practical,” said Blake Commagere, co-founder and COO of Vault12. “With the Shamir Secret Sharing plugin for Capacitor, we’re making the same Shamir’s Secret Sharing engine that powers Vault12 Guard available to anyone building the next generation of secure, user-controlled applications.”
Shamir’s Secret Sharing (SSS), devised by Adi Shamir, splits a secret into multiple shares with a configurable threshold for reconstruction. Individual shares reveal nothing about the underlying secret, ensuring that no single compromise exposes user data.
The Capacitor framework is an open source, cross-platform native runtime that allows developers to build apps using a single JavaScript/TypeScript codebase while bridging web frameworks to native device capabilities such as secure storage, biometrics, and the filesystem.
Key features include quantum-resistant security, cross-platform support, flexible storage, progress tracking, robust recovery, and production-proven reliability. Developers can access the source code, documentation, and examples on GitHub.
Vault12, over a decade old and venture-backed by Winklevoss Capital, Naval Ravikant, Data Collective, and True Ventures, continues to focus on crypto inheritance, quantum-safe encryption, and decentralised social custody. Vault12 Guard is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
