Eclipse Foundation Advances Open, Interoperable, And Trusted Dataspaces

Eclipse Foundation releases two open protocols to enable interoperable, trusted, and sovereign dataspaces, reinforcing global digital sovereignty.

The Eclipse Dataspace Working Group (EDWG) has unveiled two open protocols, the Eclipse Dataspace Protocol (EDP) and Eclipse Dataspace Decentralised Claims Protocol (EDCCP), designed to enable open, interoperable, and sovereign dataspaces worldwide. Both protocols are being submitted for international standardisation via the ISO/IEC JTC1 Publicly Available Specification (PAS) process.

The Eclipse Dataspace Protocol defines secure data sharing between entities using modern web technologies and usage control, while the Decentralised Claims Protocol provides trust and credential verification without third-party reliance. Together, they form a unified stack for secure and interoperable data exchange. EDWG will expand this stack in 2026 with additional specifications supporting Dataspace Trust frameworks.

“Open source is at the heart of digital sovereignty. By aligning open standards with community-driven innovation, we give organisations the ability to retain control over their data and infrastructure,” said Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director, Eclipse Foundation.

The protocols facilitate interoperability between sovereign dataspaces and allow organisations, industries, and nations to share data securely while retaining control. The Eclipse Foundation, Europe’s largest open source organisation, connects European priorities with global standardisation efforts, acts as an ISO/IEC PAS submitter, and contributes to harmonised standards under the EU Data Act.

“The Eclipse Dataspace Working Group’s progress shows how open collaboration can produce technologies that are both practical and globally relevant,” added Javier Valiño, Program Manager for Dataspaces, Eclipse Foundation.

EDWG provides a collaborative forum for enterprises, vendors, cloud providers, academics, and public sector organisations to shape interoperable, trustworthy, and standards-based dataspaces globally, advancing secure, sovereign data sharing across industries and borders.
