Proxmox Launches Open Source Datacenter Manager Offering Centralised Control And VMware Alternative

Proxmox releases its first stable Datacenter Manager, enabling multi-datacenter VM management and providing an open source alternative to VMware for private clouds.

Proxmox has officially launched the first full and stable version of its Datacenter Manager, positioning itself as a robust open source alternative for private cloud deployments. The product offers centralised management across multiple independent Proxmox environments, providing an aggregated view of all connected nodes and clusters.

Designed to handle complex and distributed infrastructures, from local setups to globally scaled data centres, Datacenter Manager allows migration of virtual machines (VMs) across clusters without manual network reconfiguration, a feature long associated with VMware’s private cloud offerings.

The platform also includes VM fleet management tools to identify VMs requiring patches, lifecycle management for streamlined provisioning and updates, and a dashboard offering a comprehensive view of all hosts, workloads, and their status.

Proxmox’s Virtual Environment continues to host virtual machines and containers with software-defined storage and networking, gaining popularity among organisations that do not require full enterprise-level VMware features.

Bardia Khalilifar, CEO of Australian Proxmox service provider Multiportal.io, said:
“I think it is fantastic that Proxmox has released this. It will help enable service providers to manage multiple Proxmox rigs on behalf of their clients. The product opens the floodgates for wider Proxmox adoption, especially across multiple datacenters and for use in private clouds.”

Developed by Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH under the GNU AGPLv3 open-source license, Datacenter Manager is written in Rust, based on Debian Trixie 13.2 with Linux kernel 6.17 and ZFS 2.3.4 support.
