Olimex’s Neo6502kbd combines a real 6502 processor, keyboard, four USB host ports, HDMI output, UEXT expansion and USB-C connectivity in an all-in-one retro computer.
Olimex has introduced the Neo6502kbd, an open-source hardware variant of its Neo6502 retro computer that integrates the complete system into a keyboard body. The platform uses a real 6502 processor and is designed to emulate classic systems including the Apple II and Oric Atmos, allowing users to run retro software and games on modern DVI or HDMI displays.
The integrated hardware includes four USB host ports, HDMI output, a UEXT connector for expansion, a power switch and a USB-C port used for both power and programming. Putting these interfaces alongside the keyboard removes the need for a separate computer board and external keyboard, creating a more compact setup for retro-computing and development.
Beyond running classic games, the platform is intended as a development machine for the 6502 ecosystem. Olimex lists CP/M, ProDOS, BASIC, Pascal, C, Assembler and Forth among the software environments available for the system. This gives users the ability to use the same hardware for both retro software and learning or developing 6502 programs.
The Neo6502kbd also retains the expansion-oriented approach of the Neo6502 family. Its UEXT interface can be used for additional modules, while the USB host ports provide connections for peripherals. The computer outputs video through DVI or HDMI, allowing the 6502-based system to work with modern monitors and televisions rather than requiring original retro display hardware.
As an open-source hardware project, the Neo6502kbd extends Olimex’s existing work on accessible retro-computing platforms. The combination of a physical 6502 processor, integrated keyboard, modern display output and contemporary USB-C connectivity provides a compact platform for retro gaming, 6502 programming and experimentation while retaining the openness of the Neo6502 project.
