Google Builds Open Source Foundation For Next-Gen Software-Defined Vehicles

Google is open sourcing its AAOS SDV platform via AOSP to eliminate fragmentation and accelerate innovation in software-defined vehicles.

Google has announced it will open-source its Android Automotive OS for Software-Defined Vehicles (AAOS SDV) via the Android Open Source Project in 2026, extending Android beyond infotainment to power core vehicle systems.

AAOS SDV is a lightweight, headless Android-based operating system designed for real-time automotive environments. It runs across core compute, body controls, and instrument clusters, powering functions such as climate control, lighting, cameras, mirrors, telemetry, and seat actuators.

The move targets a deeply fragmented automotive software landscape, where OEMs rely on disparate architectures, face poor interoperability, and repeatedly rebuild the same foundational systems. This results in delayed innovation and engineering effort spent on non-differentiating infrastructure.

AAOS SDV introduces a shared, open foundation with production-ready components, a standard signal catalog, over-the-air updates, and centralised compute architecture. It also enables cloud-native development using virtual devices like Cuttlefish, alongside integration with Google Cloud for digital twin capabilities, reducing development time and costs.

By open-sourcing the platform, Google aims to eliminate the industry’s “infrastructure tax”, foster a broader developer ecosystem, and enable standardisation without limiting OEM customisation. The approach also enhances transparency and security through community-driven code review.

Built for AI and telemetry-driven feedback loops, the platform supports continuous feature improvement and faster deployment cycles. Early validation comes from Renault Group and Qualcomm, signalling momentum towards an open, standardised foundation for next-generation software-defined vehicles.
