Backed by Kubuntu Focus, the ‘Bullet-Proof KDE’ initiative brings three years of full-stack long-term support for KDE Plasma 6.6, Frameworks, and Gear applications.

Hardware vendor Kubuntu Focus is sponsoring KDE developer Nate Graham’s company, TechPaladin Software, to maintain a Long-Term Support (LTS) release of the KDE desktop environment. Approved by KDE e.V., the initiative fills a gap left by the cancellation of KDE’s earlier Long-Term Support (LTS) program due to the untestable nature of backports and coverage issues for components as of May 2025.

Announced as the “Bullet-Proof KDE Software Initiative,” the project has seen an initial donation of $100,000 from Kubuntu Focus to KDE e.V. to fund developer resources and infrastructure costs. Part of the allocated funds will be used to host three continuous-integration (CI) testing nodes for KDE e.V. to automatically test proposed patches for Kubuntu 26.04 LTS.

The initiative promises to provide at least three years of bug fixes and security updates until April 2029 for KDE Plasma 6.6, KDE Frameworks 6.24, and KDE Gear 25.12. Unlike the earlier abandoned LTS efforts, which only included updates for the desktop shell, this time the maintenance will cover the complete software stack to ensure the stability of dependencies and applications. The main focus is on Kubuntu 26.04 LTS as the distribution for Kubuntu Focus workstations receives only three years of desktop support compared to the five-year support span for Ubuntu GNOME.

While the changes are primarily intended for Kubuntu, the updates and security patches will be available as open-source contributions for any Linux distribution that uses the affected software components. This allows users of other KDE-based systems to benefit from the maintenance, providing an extended LTS for KDE Plasma while filling the support window for KDE applications beyond the cancellation of the previous LTS program.
