Firmware Expands Desktop Boot Options

A firmware release combines Coreboot with AMD’s openSIL framework, offering an alternative firmware stack for selected AM5 desktop platforms with improved transparency and flexibility. 

Dasharo v0.9.0 is the first officially released open-source firmware for a consumer AMD AM5 platform. The release combines the Coreboot firmware project with AMD’s openSIL silicon initialisation framework to support MSI’s PRO B850-P motherboard equipped with Zen 4 APUs, providing an alternative to conventional proprietary motherboard firmware. 

The firmware stack replaces the legacy firmware initialisation procedure with Coreboot and openSIL firmware stacks, allowing developers to examine, modify and compile the firmware source code. It supports standard UEFI booting, Secure Boot, and compatibility with Linux and Windows 11.

The goal of the initiative is to increase firmware transparency, improve security, and simplify maintenance. By examining and modifying the firmware source code, developers can understand how it works and continue supporting hardware even after vendor firmware updates have ended.

While this particular release is limited in its consumer motherboard compatibility, it is nonetheless an important step in the development of desktop firmware. Firmware development is ongoing; support for a wider range of motherboards is expected in future Coreboot and openSIL releases.

The availability of an open-source firmware stack on a contemporary AM5 desktop platform demonstrates a practical approach to open firmware development for consumer systems.
