ESP32 Bus Expander Adds 5GHz Wi-Fi to Bit Pirate

The open-source ESP32 Bus Expander uses an ESP32-C5 or C6 as a communications co-processor, adding 5GHz Wi-Fi and IEEE 802.15.4 capabilities to the ESP32 Bit Pirate.

The ESP32 Bus Expander is a companion firmware project designed to extend the wireless capabilities of the open-source ESP32 Bit Pirate hardware debugging and experimentation platform. It runs on an ESP32-C5 or ESP32-C6 and communicates with the main Bit Pirate device over UART, allowing the primary board to access wireless features that are not available on its own hardware.

The main objective of the expansion is to add 5GHz Wi-Fi alongside the 2.4GHz wireless capabilities normally available on compatible ESP32 Bit Pirate boards. The ESP32-C5 and ESP32-C6 act as dedicated communications co-processors, allowing the Bit Pirate ecosystem to work with additional radio hardware without replacing the main development platform.

The expansion also targets IEEE 802.15.4 wireless protocols. Current development includes Zigbee functionality, while support for technologies such as Thread and Matter is part of the broader development roadmap. The firmware can operate as a standalone Zigbee device emulator and network controller, extending the Bit Pirate’s existing hardware-analysis and experimentation capabilities into additional IoT protocols.

The project follows the modular approach already used by the ESP32 Bit Pirate, where additional hardware and firmware can expand the capabilities of the main platform. The Bus Expander requires a board with at least 4 MB of flash and does not require additional PSRAM. It communicates with the Bit Pirate through a UART connection, keeping the expansion hardware separate from the primary device.

By adding an ESP32-C5 or C6 as a wireless co-processor, the ESP32 Bus Expander provides an open-source route to experiment with 5GHz Wi-Fi, Zigbee and other 802.15.4 technologies using the Bit Pirate platform. The firmware and project resources are available publicly, extending the platform’s role from a general hardware-debugging tool into a broader wireless and IoT experimentation platform.
