OpenAI Backs OpenClaw Foundation As Founder Peter Steinberger Joins Company To Build Next-Gen Personal Agents

OpenClaw’s creator joins OpenAI while the viral AI agent is moved into an independent foundation, keeping the project open source and community-led with corporate backing.

In a move that reinforces its commitment to open development rather than acquisition, OpenAI has brought Peter Steinberger, founder of OpenClaw, into the company while placing the popular AI agent under a foundation structure to ensure it remains open source.

OpenAI will continue to support and fund the project instead of absorbing or closing it, creating a hybrid model that combines corporate backing with community governance.

CEO Sam Altman confirmed the decision, stating: “Peter Steinberger is joining OpenAI to drive the next generation of personal agents,” and “OpenClaw will live in a foundation as an open source project that OpenAI will continue to support.”
Previously known as Clawdbot or Moltbot, OpenClaw functions as a personal AI assistant capable of managing emails, dealing with insurers, checking in for flights, and handling multiple administrative tasks autonomously.

The project has seen rapid adoption, crossing 100,000 stars on GitHub and drawing two million visitors in a single week since its November debut.

However, growth has drawn scrutiny. China’s industry ministry has warned that improperly configured open source agents could expose users to cyberattacks and data breaches.

Steinberger reiterated the project’s philosophy: “It’s always been important to me that OpenClaw stays open source and given the freedom to flourish. Ultimately, I felt OpenAI was the best place to continue pushing on my vision and expand its reach.”

The announcement was shared on X.
