An open-source, self-hosted platform enables local control, monitoring, automation, and print management for Bambu Lab 3D printers without relying on cloud services.
Bambuddy is an open-source and self-hosted management solution for 3D printers manufactured by Bambu Lab. Unlike the manufacturer’s cloud-based services, Bambuddy provides a browser-based interface which allows users to manage one or more printers from a local computer. The solution runs on the Raspberry Pi, NAS, mini PC, or other systems capable of running Docker.
This platform provides users with a unified interface to monitor printer statuses, manage print jobs and files, schedule prints, and store completed prints. All camera feeds, temperatures, print states, and print history are available through the web interface and due to its multi-printer capabilities, Bambuddy is suitable for individual users and print farms alike.
Another feature of Bambuddy is workflow automation. Users can use smart plugs, MQTT, REST webhooks, Home Assistant, or Prometheus to create automated workflows for controlling power and cooldowns, tracking consumption, and integrating with other systems. Notification services include Telegram, Discord, WhatsApp, emails, Pushover, and ntfy among others.
For filament management, the program offers spool tracking with automatic material system (AMS) integration. It keeps track of the remaining filament weight, tracks spool locations, synchronises with Spoolman, tracks storage locations, monitors AMS humidity, and supports material-specific drying workflows. For maintenance, there are tools for scheduling services, updates, health checks, and diagnostics for stand-alone printers or for a fleet.
This project is aimed at users who do not wish to use cloud management for their printers. If printers are configured for LAN-only mode and developer mode is enabled, Bambuddy is able to control printers without sending data through the company’s servers. Even though the official cloud services are easier for common users, this platform is more flexible for those who are looking for automation, self-hosting, and privacy.
Being released as open-source software, Bambuddy has already gained several new features, such as browser slicing, multi-user management, a mobile app, and support for fleets of up to 40 printers. The combination of monitoring, automation, print management, and local control in one web application provides an alternative workflow for users.
